Roleplay Journal

Features / Import and export

Plan in a spreadsheet, play in the journal.

Fill in a spreadsheet the way you already think, import it, and your campaign is built. Export it whenever you want a copy.

Start from a template.

Download the blank campaign template, with a sheet for each kind of item, fill it in with Excel or Google Sheets and import it. Or import The Tales of Sherlock Bones, a full detective campaign, and see how a finished one is put together.

How to Build a campaign in a spreadsheet
  1. In your campaign, open Settings.
  2. Under Export to spreadsheet, press Download a blank template. It opens fine in Google Sheets. (Export downloads your current campaign in the same layout.)
  3. Fill in the sheets: cities, factions, locations, characters, chapters, scenes, notes and location staff. Leave every ID blank for new rows.
  4. Under Import from spreadsheet, choose the file and press Import.

Good to know

  • A blank ID creates something new, hidden from players until you share it.
  • A row with an existing ID updates that item. Blank cells are left as they are.
  • Import never deletes anything.
  • Importing the same file twice with blank IDs makes duplicates. Export first, then edit that file, and the IDs match.
  • Put a * in a cell and the site makes it up: a name, a voice, ability scores or a description. A new row with only an occupation comes in as a whole character. The Read Me sheet lists which columns can be made up.

Share in bulk: Update visibility from a spreadsheet lets you change who sees many items at once.

Safe to run again.

Importing only adds and updates: nothing is ever deleted, and a blank cell never overwrites what you already have. An ID column matches rows to your existing items, and anything new starts hidden from players until you share it.

Leave a star, get a surprise.

Put a * in any cell that can be randomized, such as an occupation or a description, and the importer rolls it for you.

Take it with you.

Export your campaign to a spreadsheet at any time, set up so you can edit it and import it back. A separate visibility workbook lets you change who sees what in bulk, and anything newly shared is highlighted for your players. Import and export are for the GM only.
